However, I’ll add that the choice not to use alternate picking (regardless of whether one knows how to do it or not) is a technical necessity: play Master of Puppets or Blackened with alternate picking, and you’ll see what a mess comes out... Not to mention that playing everything in downstrokes like he does isn't exactly easy, you know.
