Absurdly, I have yet to define a part of my heart. The very first group I felt truly mine sang a part of me. I would rush home from school to listen to them, alone, without the family complaining. I’ve never felt those sad smiles in the dark again, alone, in front of the stereo. They sang of solitude.

Van der Graaf Generator are an English progressive rock group led by Peter Hammill, noted for a dark, dramatic, organ-and-sax-driven sound and intense theatrical vocals. Formed in the late 1960s, they were influential in early 1970s prog, split in the late 1970s and reunited in 2005.
