As a trumpeter in a quartet with Mulligan, he demonstrated how much freedom could be achieved by forgoing a piano. His thin voice, completely devoid of affectation, is almost indistinguishable from his trumpet. In the 1950s, among male voices, only Joao Gilberto was more brilliant than him.
