Apparently, it seemed he had no talent at all until 1936. Just the year before, Charlie Patton, Willie Brown, and Son House, one evening when they had had a bit too much to drink, had mocked him so harshly that they forced him to leave their area. But when he returned after a few months and began to play that very particular bass line that a fellow he had met at a crossroads taught him, they no longer laughed.
