LA RECENSIONE

The Magdalena Bay have done it again.

Their debut album, Mercurial World, is, in my humble opinion, one of the best of 2021: a mix of synth and dance pop that's smooth yet incredibly catchy (especially Hysterical Us), with room for a beautiful romantic song like Prophecy.

Nine days ago, the Los Angeles duo (Matthew Lewin and the ineffable Mica Tenenbaum), masters of the DIY aesthetic, returned with an album that verges on the philosophical and talks about a higher version of oneself attainable through the elusive imaginal disc, along with an alien, True, who must discover what it means to be human. An album that partly forsakes dance rhythms to explore other territories, from psychedelia (Love is Everywhere) to Generation Z-influenced experimentalism of the opener; a less immediate, denser, more layered album, marking the kind of evolution expected from a great band. The only flaw, perhaps, is a slightly excessive length.

That should be enough: it is my belief that music should not be explained, but listened to; offer a tip, a pointer, and then see what happens...

I would be surprised if it wasn’t my album of the year.

Until next time.
