THE REVIEW

The Maeror Tri (The Mourning Three, or The Grieving Three) were an Ambient/Noise/Drone trio from Leer, Germany, founded in 1988 by Stefan Knappe, Martin Git, and Helge Siehl. The sound of Maeror Tri was achieved exclusively through the use of electric guitars and tons of processing, creating unique soundscapes of immense beauty. In their early releases, the sound was more industrial/noise. In 1996, Helge Siehl left Maeror Tri to found his own project called Tausendschoen, while Stefan Knappe and Martin Git continued under the name Troum.

In cult records like Multple Personlaity Disorder, Myein , and Language Of Flames And Sound, some also characterized by exceptional artwork that made them true collector's items (Language Of Flames And Sound featured an actual cardboard human brain while the cover of Myein reproduced an Egyptian pyramid), they redrew the boundaries of electronic music by creating a kind of bridge between the German Kosmische of the early '70s and industrial and ambient music. The structure of their music is very minimal, based on gloomy drones that can create a truly other metaphysical atmosphere, putting the listener in touch with an unknown reality. The mentioned Myein in particular is their absolute peak: it's a true acid trip that enters your brain and never leaves. After the first track “Phlogiston,” characterized by obsessive and minimal cosmic reverberations, and the second track “Desiderium,” very calm and atmospheric, the real masterpiece of this epochal album comes with the title track of about 47 minutes. It begins as noise and industrial: then suddenly the music becomes meditative with a long hypnotic drone that takes the mind traveling beyond time and space. We are on the same level as Zeit by Tangerine Dream. Here Maeror Tri have outdone themselves, reaching God and traveling back in time to prehistoric times when man was one with nature.

Myein is a masterpiece of ambient music, and all followers of this genre should know it. Available on Bandcamp.
