New indie-genetic product? Maybe. Or maybe there's more.

Yes, because after a first EP, "Rock and Roll Night Club," recorded hastily in the same year, this comes out with a not-bad full-length album, released by Captured Tracks. Songs, here we are talking about real songs, not the usual compositions lacking intrinsic substance, always in search of the "cool sound."

Mac DeMarco, a twenty-three-year-old Canadian, from Vancouver Island, before becoming a full-time musician, rolled up his sleeves and without any airs did everything that came his way, from road paver to even undergoing medical experiments for money (you can somewhat see it on his face).

His proposal is condensed in thirty minutes of straightforward melodies, that reach you just as they are, verse - chorus, verse - chorus; a simple setup, guitar, bass, drums, and there you go, playing without necessarily trying to bamboozle the listener.

The guitar is a child of the Eighties, with lots of reverb and a bit of scattered chorus here and there, sometimes out of tune, but it too contributes to the carefree atmosphere of the album.

He describes his style with the words "jizz jazz" which reminds me so much of that "Jimmy Jazz" by the Clash from "London Calling", not coincidentally.

The lyrics are also very simple; after all, I wouldn't expect anything else from someone just over twenty. Tales of everyday life, dreamed loves (Dreamin), up to praising his favorite brand of cigarettes, Ode to Viceroy, the first single for which he himself shot the music video, in his unique way, of course.

But it's his way of singing, with that reassuring something, that makes you make peace with the world. Listen to the closing song of the album, Still Together, voice and acoustic guitar, and you can really feel close to him, at that exact moment.

In life, eventually, there's always something waiting for you, you never know when, you never know how, but eventually it happens.

He doesn't take himself too seriously, just look at the album cover. The guy immediately charms you with his carefree demeanor, and this, in my opinion, is already a point in his favor. A successful album release, in short, we'll see what he'll manage to pull off later!

In conclusion, check out some of his live performances (he's recently been to Italy and I didn't miss it) to understand his approach method. I recommend his performance for Pitchfork Tv, held in February of this year.

Particular signs: wildly crazy.

Mac DeMarco is one of those guys who have a dream and, after finishing high school, decide to dedicate soul and body to achieving that goal.

Mac DeMarco thus manages to sing about the day of a common person, no superstar or super-coolness: the simple and humble folk.
