THE REVIEW

From Canada, the "Lullabye Arkestra", featuring Justin Small on drums and vocals, and Katia Taylor on bass and vocals.

"Ampgrave" is the debut released by Constellation in 2006

The duo is accompanied by the "Arkestra". Sax, trumpet, strings, organ, a ten-member choir, and an orchestra conductor named Deadeye.

Considering the lineup, erase from your mind the idea you have of the music produced by this quirky group.

"Unite !!!!!!", a gloomy organ begins, bass and drums set the pace for a "stoner" black mass, the delirious "Arkestra" starts, the choir screams, skeletons dance, the rhythm accelerates, a psychotic orchestral dark hard blues.

"All I Can Give Ya", "Hold On", vaguely 60s rock blues, a cabaret-like, gothic Janis Joplin, let's say a distant relative, accompanied by a dance band after an extended listening session of Black Widow. They have a vague idea of what to do, the instruments derail, the screams overlap. Order is maintained by the duo's solid rhythm section and the orchestra conductor Deadeye ??

Baroque, Hollywoodian freak beat, "Y Make Me Snake"

Lux Interior and Poison Ivy in tuxedos, illuminated by a spotlight.

Grotesque Black Sabbath accompanied by an orchestra and a choir of howler monkeys.

The Thee Hypnotics of "Soul, Glitter & Sin" and Gallon Drunk are behind the scenes.

Dark, chaotic, noisy music, rich in seemingly unviable suggestions on paper.

The curtain falls.

Summary by Bot

Lullabye Arkestra's 2006 debut, Ampgrave, is a dark, chaotic and experimental album blending stoner rock, goth blues, and orchestral elements. The duo is supported by a large ensemble including choir and orchestra conductor. The music is complex, noisy, and theatrical, with comparisons to acts like Janis Joplin and Lux Interior. Despite its seemingly unviable combination of styles, the album maintains order through a solid rhythm section and dynamic arrangements. Overall, it's a strong, unique debut rated 7 out of 10.
