Lucio Dalla: "1983"

After years of successful albums and tours, Lucio Dalla begins to show a desire to turn (at least partially) a new page; eclecticism surrounds almost all the grooves of the album, both in the lyrics and in the music.

The album doesn't always achieve the same results as its predecessors, but there are at least two anthology-worthy tracks: "1983" and "L'altra parte del mondo".

In the title track, forty years of Italian history unfold, balancing between autobiography and collective memory, marred only by a slightly overly verbose text; the second is a jewel of epic melancholy like only Dalla can create.

The writing isn't as inspired in all tracks, but there are some beautiful songs; starting with the amusing "Stronzo", with its mock-English vocalizations, "Noi come voi" is quite catchy and rhythmic, but often sounds familiar. The other songs are pleasant ("Pecorella" above all) but perhaps too introspective and reflective.

In memory, both of the author himself (who in subsequent tours tended to remove the album) and of the audience, "1983" did not leave a mark like in the past, but it deserves a reevaluation, as proof of the courage and ability of the Bolognese singer-songwriter to seek new paths.

Made at Fonoprint in Bologna. In the studio: gli Stadio. Strings written by Fabio Liberatori. Produced by Renzo Cremonini for Pressing. The organization is by Tobia Righi.

1983 has given me something, something that will probably last a long time: boredom and loneliness have given me the chance to discover the world of music.

Despite the efforts made, solitude remains. That’s how it feels: like a harmonica without a mouth, like the sleep of children.

"'Pecorella' makes me infinitely tender, its lightness... this 'little girl in music'"

"A melancholic album written by Dalla for his fortieth birthday, full to the brim with the previous Dalla."
