THE REVIEW

The Low choose to start from their songwriting. And to systematically destroy it.

They are aided in this by a sickly electronic sound that disintegrates the songs and sounds, rather than building and adding.

The record of the global pandemic. Darkness spreading. The cry of pain breaks in the throat and decomposes on the lips. In the void, a small flame. Hope? Beauty? That remains, the darkness becomes the backdrop.

.....hey, what the heck did I just write?

Summary by Bot

Low's Double Negative album begins by deconstructing traditional songwriting through eerie electronic distortion. The record echoes the global pandemic's darkness, with pain and despair intertwining. Despite the bleak atmosphere, a subtle spark of hope or beauty persists, making the album a compelling soundtrack to troubled times.

Low

Low were an American indie rock band formed in Duluth, Minnesota, known for their early slowcore minimalism and later turns toward more experimental, electronics-forward production. Core members Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker (who were married) anchored the group’s sound; bassist Steve Garrington is also featured in these reviews. Mimi Parker died in 2022, and Hey What is widely described as the band’s final album.

"Double Negative is one of those albums that provoke a sense of alienation after the first listen, greater awareness after the second, and a sudden and irreversible love from the third onwards."

The production by B. J. Burton is perfect and incredibly meticulous in untangling such a complex and richly layered sound mix.
