Rating: Everyone remembers them for "FOREVER CHANGES" or "DA CAPO". Gigantic and unforgettable records.
But in my opinion, the double album "OUT THERE" released in 1970 is literally the best album by Love. Of the original band, only the legendary Arthur Lee remains, who for this new work (as well as for the previous one) finds musicians of extraordinary quality who manage to effortlessly transition from acid rock to blues, from funky to the purest hard rock with incredible ease.
Every song would deserve a separate review due to the many nuances each contains. The compositional level is through the roof.
I'LL PRAY FOR YOU, STAND OUT, THE EVERLASTING FIRST (with Jimi Hendrix on guitar..), GIMMI A LITTLE BREAK and STAND OUT are the rockiest parts of the album. There's an epic retrieval. SIGNED D. C. directly from the debut album of 1966. Here we find an even more heart-wrenching, bleeding track. With a chilling vocal performance by Lee. Believe me. Chilling.
ILL' PRAY FOR YOU would have deserved at least a 5th place in the charts as it is so singable and entertaining. WILLOW WILLOW, DOGGONE, GATHER AROUND are epic portraits of a Summer of Love that is no more. Simple yet profoundly beautiful tracks in their compositional brilliance.
Finally, the absolute masterpiece. LISTEN TO MY SONG. Probably the most beautiful song ever composed by Lee. An absolute masterpiece. A track that takes your breath away at first listen and makes you run to buy the entire discography of the band (solo records included) in the hope of finding that "wonder" again.
The next track is the already mentioned DOGGONE, and that's where you realize you want to listen to albums like this continuously.
Released by Big Beat Records, "Out There" was quickly forgotten. It didn’t sell and was never reevaluated, unlike the band's "Elektra" period.
If only it had been supported by a major record company, this album would have been among the top hundred of all time.
