The Profile

Louis Andriessen (1939–2021) was a Dutch composer and central figure of the Hague school, known for politically charged, rhythmically driven works that fuse minimalism with European modernism.

Born in Utrecht in 1939; died in 2021. Leading Dutch composer associated with the Hague school. Key works include De Staat (1972–76), De Materie (1984–88), De Tijd (1980s), Writing to Vermeer (with Peter Greenaway), and La Commedia (winner of the 2011 Grawemeyer Award). Frequent collaborations with the Schönberg/Asko Ensemble and Reinbert de Leeuw.

Two reviews spotlight Andriessen’s De Staat and De Materie with praise for their rhythmic drive, political bite, and austere beauty. De Staat (1972–76) is framed as engaged, block-constructed minimalism with vivid brass and female voices. De Materie (staged by Robert Wilson, premiered 1989) is dissected across its four parts, from percussive assault to Mondrian-derived structures and an elegy for Marie Curie.
