The nineties weren’t the best for hardcore, at least for me. On one side, there was the explosion of pop/punk bands like Green Day, Lag Wagon, No FX, etc., and on the tougher side, the rise of the super macho tough guy bands that already offered a squared and metallic sound, a precursor of some current metalcore. But, fortunately, there were also great, unforgettable groups.
It’s definitely the case of Los Crudos, from Chicago. This CD collects the entire production of the terrible Hispanic/American quartet, and it is no coincidence that it’s titled “Discografia” in Spanish and not in English, also because the small DIY label co-producing it is the Madrid-based Beat Generation. There are a whopping 74 tracks (!!!!!!), all strictly sung in Spanish and furious to the point of hysteria. Indeed, the style of Crudos is nothing but bare-bones and tight hardcore punk USA style, even faster and sung with a voice that can’t be more intense. Kind of like taking Minor Threat’s “Seein’ Red” and playing it at 45 RPM. The lyrics are politicized but never trite and very sensitive to the issues of all American ethnic minorities. All these 62 tracks, because the last 12 are live, vibrate with rage from one minute or sometimes even less, the frantic energy that emerges is enormous, and these Los Crudos really were a great hardcore band that made disciples and left its mark.
It’s a joy to note that that cloudy period hasn’t completely obscured the spirit (see, it continues..?) of a music that has managed to regenerate itself. There were not only the Crudos, but maybe other reviews for other bands...
bye, goodnight to the players.
