The Lombroso, namely Dario Ciffo (guitars, bass, vocals) and Agostino Nascimbeni (vocals, drums), represent an interesting alternative to the mephitic pop-rock that infests the airwaves today. The project, born as a joke and quietly in 2004, has gathered such an audience and acclaim that singer-multi-instrumentalist Dario Ciffo decided to permanently leave Afterhours (backing vocals and violin) and dedicate himself entirely to the duo. And the total dedication pays off, as this "Credi di conoscermi" is indeed something special. A pastiche of offbeat songs between Battistian pop and the beat of Equipe 84 and Dik Dik, modernized by a taste in arrangements typical of the 00's and truly surprising vocality.
Possessing a remarkable range and a distinctive guitar taste, "Ciffo" plays along with Agostino, who behind the drums does all kinds of acrobatics between tempo changes, stops, and sudden accelerations (wonderful in this sense "Cosa stai dicendo"). All the while never forgetting the search for catchy melodies. The awareness of the work's originality also turns out to be the limit of a record that could easily fit among the things most commercially accessible, yet it does not. The single chosen to promote the album, "Credi di conoscermi", is very well crafted, blatantly pop, even too much, to the point of deceiving the listener. "Credi di conoscermi", captivates but misleads, seems to ask you for a superficial listening and instead forces you to chase it in its offbeat insights. All with the sun in your face because this is a warm album, with a summer chill.
Now that the band's third work is in preparation, I am really curious to know which other path they will take. In any case, I will wait for them eagerly if only because live, as a duo, they hold the stage more than a full band does.
