The Profile

Liturgy is an American experimental/avant-garde black metal band from Brooklyn, formed in 2005 and led by Hunter Hunt-Hendrix. Known for a self-styled “transcendental black metal” approach, the group’s work—especially Aesthethica—has been both acclaimed and hotly debated.

Formed in Brooklyn in 2005 by Hunter Hunt-Hendrix. Releases include Renihilation (2009), Aesthethica (2011), The Ark Work (2015), H.A.Q.Q. (2019), Origin of the Alimonies (2020), and 93696 (2023), with albums released on labels including Thrill Jockey.

One review tackles Liturgy’s Aesthethica as a divisive, hyper-energetic statement released by Thrill Jockey. It highlights unusual timbres, long tumultuous tracks, and a love-it-or-hate-it reception. Influences from Branca to Burzum are cited. The verdict is balanced: hardly boring, often effective.
