The first LP by Lit is an excellent demonstration of how in a punk-rock album, catchiness and immediacy are not always synonymous with predictability or lack of content. In fact, in 1997, these four Californians released this CD, which has the great merit of offering a high level of heterogeneity among the various tracks (especially for the genre in question) and a widespread dose of talent.
Lit strikes the right chord and immediately makes you want to mosh with overwhelming and direct songs like the opener "Beginning", "My World", "No Big Thing", and "Bitter" (my favorite); and so far, everything is normal: the real surprise is the more expansive and melodic tracks. Listen, above all, to “Explode”: seductive vocal lines that go from sweetness to anger, not to mention the well-executed guitar solo; an absolutely engaging song! Or the oriental elements that enrich "Habib", certainly not usual for a punk-rock easy-listening band... "Dozer" excellently plays the role of the tear-jerker and heart-stealing ballad, while "Fireman" leaves its mark with its beautiful, slightly psychedelic guitar solo.
The Popoff brothers deliver their best performance, one on vocals, the other on guitar: the former changing register multiple times even within the same track, the latter presenting a powerful and arrogant riffing along with more than decent creativity in executing solos. The drums hit just right, while the bassist does his job without forgetting to make himself heard, as in the intro to "My World" or the aforementioned "Fireman".
In short, an album to discover and listen to. It's a piece of advice I also give to those who don't like this band and have always labeled them as predictable and dull (I was among them!); I believe it will change your mind.
