Today a small review painted in pink.
I'm writing a few words about a wonderful album composed by a wonderful artist, Lisa Gerrard. The album's title is "Whale Rider", the soundtrack to a beautiful film titled "La ragazza delle balene" by Niki Caro.
I must admit that Gerrard has been a fabulous discovery for me. Only in recent months have I discovered this fabulous musician. Behind her are numerous collaborations with musicians of considerable importance including Hans Zimmer and Klaus Schulze.
The few albums by Lisa Gerrard that I have listened to so far are, to me, works of art. Ambient music with many dark undertones. Music that I personally adore!
"Whale Rider" is a record that immerses us totally into the coldest and deepest waters, 15 pieces that create a perfect descent into the mysteries of the (perhaps) still unexplored abyss.
Atmospheres that smell of mystery envelop us in total abandonment, strange creatures dance around us wondering to which race we belong. We, in that absolute darkness, are guests of the mystery and its creatures. Gerrard turns all of this masterfully into music and manages to do it splendidly.
On the other hand, having collaborated with a master of experimentation like Klaus Schulze, Gerrard now shows that she can navigate this genre of music very well. As a humble musician, I am convinced that in ambient music, technique is not fundamental to the success of the work, unlike imagination, creativity, and the complete command of the right instruments to create this type of music... fundamental ingredients for the success of a work that aims to give the listener a "sound-visual" experience.
"Whale Rider" is an album to be listened to in solitude, in the dark, without interruptions and above all without skipping tracks, we can define it as a concept album and we certainly do not understand this from the lyrics (which in this album are almost absent since it's fundamentally an instrumental work) but from the music. From the distant call of "supposedly" beautiful mermaids to "opaque" and "sinister" sounds that bring us to a state of ecstasy while always making us feel that sense of "alert," constantly reminding us that we are on a journey to completely unknown destinations.
Those who love this type of music, those who love ambient music, in my opinion, must be willing to let go completely, allowing the mind to work through the images that our subconscious for some obscure reason shows us. Often in a bizarre way, often in a frightening way.
"The mind loves the unknown. It loves images whose meaning is unknown, for the meaning of the mind itself is unknown." René Magritte
