Link Wray is one of the masters of rock. His legendary story begins back in 1954 when he composed "Rumble." Released a couple of years later, it was a big hit, thanks to its dark, cavernous sound. The record labels tried to steer the guitarist's career towards easy success, but Wray always remained true to his way of understanding music, paying the price of being confined to the fringes of the big business. Constantly in search of new and ingenious sounds on his Gibson, he was the prototype of a solid, dense rock full of great creativity, where the rhythmic section served mostly to ignite his distorted and scorching guitar riffs. Today, he is recognized by all as the father of a style that anticipated by many years the seasons of various genres, from Surf to Garage to Heavy Metal to Psychobilly. His musical language, defined as fuzz-tone sound, was so innovative and personal that it influenced a multitude of artists and bands; among his debtors are the Cramps and the Fuzztones, but also Pete Townshend, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Ray Davies, with "You Really Got Me" by the Kinks being one of the most tangible examples.
"Rumble! The Best of Link Wray" is the collection I have chosen to propose. It comprises about twenty tracks, mostly short instrumentals. I only mention "Batman Theme" "Jack The Ripper" and "Ace Of Spades," my favorites. For those who don't like albums with many instrumentals, I recommend "Guitar Preacher: The Polydor Years," two discs containing the best compositions from the three albums recorded by the guitarist in the early '70s. "Good Good Lovin," my favorite Wray song, can be found on "Bullshot"
PS. (Quote) He often said to his audience that while playing the guitar he felt close to God. Maybe heaven is too quiet a place, where an irreverent guitarist like him would be asked to turn down the volume; or maybe he's right there now, and his fuzz-tone proudly resonates for the joy of the Lord.
