Blood... synonymous with soul, life, conscience, dignity. Blood... throbbing in the veins, spilled on the earth, intoxicated by alcohol and drugs, inflamed by the sun and feelings. Blood... oozing from this music, now joyful and vital, now bitter and angry. Una sangre, one blood, a proud blood of civil passion, which in this album we find translated into multiple musical interweavings with rare vitality and originality.
Lila with her splendid voice reveals sounds that tell emotions, traditions, history, culture, a land: Mexico. And yet this country belongs to her only in part, because hers is a "border" upbringing, having lived between Los Angeles, Oaxaca and Minnesota. Mexican only on her mother's side, while her father is American, she grew up among different cultural influences, which we find in her music. From the stomping Caribbean rhythms of "Viborita" to unusual reinterpretations of Mexican tradition ("La bamba"), which ask you to clap your hands, stomp your feet, and finally get up and dance. But there is no lack of sounds that seem to belong to the desert between Mexico and Texas, celebrated by electric guitars expanded like the sun reverberating on the sand. Visceral feelings, involving man and sky, are flanked by sweet and intimate melodies of the indigenous Purépecha, lost in the night of time ("Tirineni Tsïtsiki"), and by stories of cockroaches going crazy because they no longer have marijuana to smoke (La cucaracha, la cucaracha/que ya no puede caminar/porque no tiene/porque le falta/la marijuana que fumar).
Accompanied by excellent musicians, mostly South American, Lila sings in Spanish, in English and in the languages of ancient Mexican populations, managing to maintain her high and versatile expressive abilities unchanged in every context. Many songs have the gift of alternating melodic registers, which she interprets in different ways, but with her usual skill: sometimes she whispers the words, other times she recites them, or she lets herself be carried away in endless vocal developments. And everything is wrapped in a sort of flamboyant pride, which celebrates a culture of resistance.
A fragment of a prayer witnesses this, dedicated to all women fighting for dignity and respect, like Digna Ochoa who was killed because she defended the civil rights of the weakest: "I am a woman who cries, I am a woman who speaks, I am a woman who gives life, I am a woman who strikes, I am a spirit woman, I am a woman who screams" ("Dignificada: la balada de Digna Ochoa").
This music was conceived for the universally understood senses. Spirituality, joy, passion, and deep lacerations alternate in the words and sounds. From this perspective, then, the album mirrors the blood that pulses in the heart of a world. It wasn't easy, it's not little.
Tracklist Lyrics and Videos
01 Viborita (04:17)
