Gray sky, very dark, almost a nighttime setting, with occasional flashes of lightning that illuminate it with a brief and intense light, continuous downpours, with water slamming against the shutters carried by the wind. Thunder, in the distance, nearby, first weak, then thunderous, only serve to increase the sense of anguish and veiled sadness emanated by this atmosphere. The same exact sensations, indeed, worse and more exacerbated, are what Life's Illness evoke in their EP Depressive Black Metal "Love - A Lost Vision...".
Personally, I don't love the genre, but when music can provoke real emotions, it deserves recognition. In this album consisting of only two tracks, "I Am Thy Razor" and "Through The Wounds Of Melancholy," the band encapsulates a really vast array of negative emotions; anguish, sadness, fear, anger, desolation, 27 minutes of pure darkness. Essential, slow, extremely melancholic chords are repeated endlessly, they enter the mind and lead one to look into the darkest areas of oneself, piercing and sudden screams arrive in the tracks like tears and only serve to increase the sensation of anxiety and "claustrophobia," sometimes leaving listeners baffled by this work, sudden accelerations sometimes drag them out of this dark tunnel, only to send them back into the shadows in a matter of a few measures.
Technically analyzing the album, there's not much to say, everything is relatively very simple, based on minimal chords and very slow, schematic rhythms; a negative note can be found in the singing that is unfortunately sometimes out of place, on several occasions, I would have found it more useful to let the music go on its own rather than abruptly interrupting the atmosphere that had been created, furthermore, the singer's occasional violent coughs could have been avoided, it almost seems like the scream is scratching his throat and forcing him to cough.
However, Depressive Black is not a genre that focuses on technique and musicality, and therefore these imperfections are absolutely negligible, the album aims to hit the listener deeply, and it truly succeeds perfectly.
