The glory days are long gone for Liam Gallagher, those days back in 2008 with Oasis when he sang on "Dig out your soul," an album where the band re-emerged with a new look that brought hope for future creativity. But then the usual fights with his brother Noel happened, leading to a breakup in the midst of the tour, with both embarking on solo careers; the latter with the High Flying Birds, while Liam first with Beady Eye and now with this eponymous project that has influenced various producers scattered across tracks and albums, like hit-maker Greg Kurstin. It all comes in a style that obviously recalls his original group, paying more tribute than usual to the Beatles, especially in this EP, where he performs his songs in an Unplugged version.
To discuss this surprise album, it’s inevitable to look back at what the English frontman has produced so far in the post-Oasis period: saving the album "As you Were," a handful of albums, and nice, listenable songs that sometimes turn out to be predictable. It could be said that the three albums of his brother are much more interesting (and let’s make this comparison already, regardless of the direction taken with recent EPs like "Black star dancing").
There is no exception here; it flows well, but that’s about it. Considering the duration and the 7 songs (plus a demo), it’s hard to understand the purpose of the operation, also considering the lack of new material and the inclusion of three Oasis songs that, sadly to say, represent the peak of the record as one might expect, though it must be said that "Once" holds its own well. However, as previously mentioned, the occasion of this release could have been used to propose a more extensive tracklist and make a proper Unplugged album. Instead, we remain with a release dedicated exclusively to die-hard fans. So, for those who haven't done it yet and want to stay in this atmosphere, I would recommend listening to the beautiful MTV Unplugged '96 of Oasis, pity only for the lack of Liam in that live due to laryngitis, and meanwhile, there's a rumor that he was teasing his brother from the balcony during the pauses between songs, a real prankster.
