The Profile

Les Rallizes Dénudés are a Japanese underground rock group formed in 1967 at Kyoto University by guitarist/singer Takashi Mizutani. Known for brutally loud, feedback-heavy shows and a scarcity of official releases, their legend spread through innumerable live bootlegs. Their history intersects with radical politics, and their last known live performance was in 1996.

Formed in Kyoto in 1967 by Takashi Mizutani; Japanese noise/psychedelic/experimental rock; extreme volume and feedback-heavy live shows with strobe-laden staging; discography dominated by bootlegs; last known concert in 1996; bassist Moriaki Wakabayashi participated in the 1970 Yodo-go hijacking of Japan Airlines Flight 351.

Three reviews trace Les Rallizes Dénudés as a fiercely underground Japanese noise/psych institution formed in 1967 at Kyoto. The focus is on feedback-soaked live recordings, scant official releases, and a bootleg-driven legacy. References to the Velvet Underground abound, but harsher and more hypnotic. Political extremity and the 1970 Yodo-go hijacking shadow their myth. Last known live activity: 1996.
