For a while now, I wanted to write a review on DeBaser, but I couldn't find anything "interesting" (or "new"). Why talk about already famous characters, why should I give a comment when there are already thousands? I wanted to find something that was unpublished. And I found it. The aforementioned artist, Leona Lewis, doesn't even have a review. Rightly so: she is a debut singer and not so famous (for the moment).
English, she won a British talent show, The X Factor (the equivalent of Amici in Italy, except in this British show they search exclusively for singers). Upon attending the auditions, the judges immediately noticed her extraordinary vocal abilities: with a splendid cover of "Over The Rainbow" by Judy Garland, she made the audience's eyes pop out. So, after obviously entering the school, she won the edition, the third of the program, in December 2006. That same month she released a cover, "A Moment Like This" by Kelly Clarkson, which immediately topped the English Top 40. She took a period of pause, and at the end of 2007 released "Bleeding Love", which definitively launched her as a singer. Without even having time to hit record stores, it positioned itself, like the previous cover, at the top of the best-selling singles: it remained there for 7 weeks. In November, the album came out: in just 34 days, it sold 1 million and 200,000 copies, becoming the second best-selling album of the year in England, with "Back To Black" by Amy Winehouse before her. Of course, these are just numbers, so to draw conclusions about her, we’ll have to wait.
You can say many things about her voice: as soon as you hear it, it seems like listening to Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston. "Bleeding Love" is a catchy track, immediately captivating: a classic love theme, but not too obvious. What can certainly be said is that this girl has a crazy voice. Will it be enough to make her a "good" singer and not make her look like all the others? We'll see. Let's hope she isn't just another passing trend, because she has the capabilities. One thing is certain: in Italy, there are no people like her, and if there are, no one knows them. We need to wake up. I'm fed up with the usual lousy singers we export abroad. Is it possible that established (in every sense) singers can only be found abroad and never in Italy? Bah.. In the meantime, I invite you to watch the live performance of "Bleeding Love" on the Paul O’Grady Show on YouTube, truly exceptional.
