THE REVIEW

New release from Black Widow: this time it's the English band Landskap, a group that can be classified under doom and psych, characteristic genres of the Genoese label. Landskap already have a solid, intense album under their belt. Now, they release this new II which celebrates a kind of alchemical marriage between the Doors and Black Sabbath: as you listen to the CD, the spirit of Jim Morrison hovers powerfully thanks to the charismatic voice of singer Jake Harding. From the opening track, the lengthy "Leave It All Behind" of nearly 11 minutes, we are immersed in a sulfurous and psychedelic atmosphere where the keyboards of Kostas Panagioutus are prominent: the ending is characterized by the harsh and gritty sounds of the guitars. The following "South Of No North" starts with calm and almost jazzy atmospheres that can recall "Riders On The Storm" by the Doors: the voice remains powerful and "Morrison-esque" while the organ and guitars are accompanied by a precise and essential rhythmic section. "Though The Ash" instead has a captivating and essential riff, while "Landskape Theme" is edgy and supported by a guitar in pure Tony Iommi style. With "Tomorrow's Ghost" we dive again into jazzy realms, very close to the later Doors. The concluding "Lady Sundae" takes us on a journey back in time to the late '60s when psychedelia reigned supreme: the guitar is acid just right and paints evanescent landscapes accompanied by the discreet notes of the keyboards: it almost feels like listening to the Grateful Dead: it's a great ride that continues with distorted guitars prominently featured. In my opinion, these Landskap are an excellent band and a pleasant surprise. Honor to Black Widow for confirming they have a great nose in the matter.
