THE REVIEW

The new album by Lana Del Rey is of an absolute high level. It hardly matters that it adds little in terms of novelty to her discography, no significant turning points or drastic changes, in short. We could say she retreats into her comfort zone, but what a comfort zone!
What stands out is her usual "light depth," the admirable and elegant minimalism of the arrangements always functional to the pieces and, not least, her splendid voice which she controls sumptuously, especially in "White Cross," one of the peaks of the album. (Who said you need to shout to be considered good?)
Among the best is also "Yosemite," one of those songs where Del Rey demonstrates that it takes her very little to turn everything she touches into gold. Memorable chorus and chilling atmosphere.
"Breaking Up Slowly" is instead a successful duet with Nikki Lane, who is also a co-author of the track, while "Dance Till We Die" is another undisputed gem: sublime melody and surprising parentheses in Fiona Apple mode.
The album concludes with a cover of a Joni Mitchell song ("For Free"), absolutely perfect for drawing the curtain.
Prolific like few (another release of hers is expected this year) and with a decade-long career supported by a high level of quality production, there is no doubt that Del Rey has demonstrated through actions that she is not a fleeting phenomenon, a shooting star. And I add that combining in 2021 success and high quality in music is certainly not for everyone.
There's no doubt that her songwriting is of a pop nature, but what a pop, guys.
