Rating: Cool Hand Luke (Nick Manofredda) is one of the most beautiful films ever made. Supported by Stuart Rosenberg's solid and flawless direction, one of Paul Newman's finest performances, and an extraordinary George Kennedy, this film is a story of rebellion, that of Luke Jackson, which mirrored the great changes occurring in society (year 1967), a strong story with great themes and full of creative insights!
Contributing to the film being an authentic masterpiece is also the beautiful soundtrack composed by Lalo Shifrin. Indeed, the entire movie is permeated with blues, country, folk, and jazz, all skillfully mixed with symphonic music, an experiment that is truly exceptional.
The main theme of the film is the famous Down Here On The Ground, which has been performed by various artists (Wes Montgomery among many). Then, among others, it's worth mentioning The Chase, focused entirely on the sound of the banjo, the sensual Lucille, the stunning blues Just A Closer Walk With Thee and Arletta Blues.
One of the gems of this record is undoubtedly the delightful Plastic Jesus (also covered by the Flaming Lips), composed by Ed Rush and immortalized by Newman's performance.
In conclusion, listening to this music will not only be a gratifying experience but also an invitation to (re)discover a masterpiece now buried by easy and commercial cinema, based more on special effects than on stories or performances, pre-packaged and banal products, which, to quote a phrase from the film, are the symbol of the "failure to communicate!"
Completely the opposite of Cool Hand Luke, which according to the liner notes, is instead the true triumph!
