La Janara is a group from Irpinia – near Avellino – with 2 demos behind them that were later released by Black Widow. Now their debut album "Tenebra" comes out, again for the Genoese label. The title is very fitting and immediately conveys the nightmare atmospheres that are well described in the lyrics. Their imagery is filled with horror, drawing from the oral tradition of their homeland. If the lyrics are extremely gothic and as black as pitch, the music is equally dark, consecrated to an occult, somber, and obsessive doom. Raffaela Càngero's voice guides us on this procession through the infernal realms. The music is tense, with hard-hitting guitars prominently featured as can be heard from the very beginning in the intense "Malevento." The following "Mater Tenbrarum" ("Inferno" by Dario Argento?) continues this esoteric journey to the roots of magic with a pressing rhythm. Instead, "Violante aveva un osso di capra" is an acoustic folk-style track that breaks the ever-palpable tension, even though the lyrics are very occult, immersing us in a nightmare atmosphere. With the title track, we return to the heavy-doom territories dear to Death SS. The beginning of "Cera" is calm, but then the music sharpens like a blade. "Volano i corvi" is another folk piece, an acoustic gem that complements the rest of the album. The highlight of "Tenebra" is the concluding long track "Ver Sacrum" (just like the gothic music site). It is the most prog track, an epic and airy ride that boasts a wonderful lyric that openly pays homage to Irpinia. A band to follow and discover that will be appreciated by those who have followed some productions under the Black Widow label like L’Impero delle Ombre and Malombra, to mention other cursed bands from our peninsula.
