"L300 undErgroUnd hip hop philosophy". This is the phrase you’ll find on the homepage of the L300 website, alias Secasek and DJ Cue, a Trieste-based MC and a Sardinian producer dedicated to linguistic and rhythmic experimentation applied to contemporary black music. Their music is far from the mainstream and commercial circles, a raw and experimental rap that smells of street and freestyle to the last rhyme, a kind of music that, in a country like ours, more interested in the latest releases from the likes of Lollipop, could only resign them to total anonymity.
A real shame, given that this "Secasaga," released in May 2000 after a self-produced demo tape, is rich with interesting elements and insights worth considering.
In just over thirty-three minutes, Secasek and DJ Cue outline an original and atypical hip-hop universe, always interesting and with a thousand nuances. Indeed, in the nine tracks of the album, the influence of the Def Jux school is strong, especially that of the genius El-P; at times it spills into excesses of conceptualism and abstraction, but in any case, "Secasaga" stands out from the myriad of Italian record releases, and its desire to go against the grain and, above all, its attempt to implant a different approach to rap in our Bel Paese, is appreciable.
Sure, it didn’t work out too well for them, but listening to Seca’s tight metrics (an MC with a sharp tongue and a unique and enviable technique) and the dark and intense atmospheres created by Cue in excellent pieces like "Saga," "Taglio Corto," "Chi Per Primo?" or in the magnificent concluding "Sul Concetto," one cannot fail to recognize the significant abilities of our artists, faded away, alas, too soon. In fact, since 2002, L300 has lost track.
Have they broken up? Have they lost hope in making music in a country that categorically repudiates it? No one knows. In any case, our underground champions deserve credit for having produced a small milestone in hip-hop made in Italy, a work outside the box and totally ignored that truly deserved more attention. A must-find.
