Congratulations to all women. Today marks exactly 5 years since Kylie Minogue's concert in Italy, in Milan, at the Mediolanum Forum in Assago. The "Aphrodite - Les Folies Tour" indeed touched our peninsula on the evening of International Women's Day; Kylie hadn't performed in Italy since 2002 (the year of the Fever tour in the exact same place). I arrived at the Mediolanum Forum with two old friends who weren't Kylie followers. I remember that even though the gates opened at 6:30 PM and the concert started at 9 PM, we were already in line for the parterre by 7 in the morning after a double coffee. It's worth noting that we were the only ones, but soon all the other 12,000 arrived, making it a SOLD OUT for the Italian date.
Around 6:30, we entered, and we were in the very front row; the stage was truly beautiful, large, and there was much anticipation to see this show produced by Disney specifically to support Kylie's latest album "Aphrodite," released the previous year 2010, preceded by the single "All the Lovers" (and presented as a world premiere at the Wind Music Awards at the Verona Arena.....I was there too!).
But let's go step by step. At 8 PM, a DJ arrives, receiving a modest applause even if the 40 minutes he plays fly by! Everyone wants her, the worldwide princess of pop, the quintessential gay icon, the goddess of pop in all her beauty.
At exactly 9 PM, the lights go out, and the intro starts with sexy and semi-nude dancers going to fetch Kylie, who emerges from a giant shell, not before introducing it all with the phrase: MILAN, ARE YOU READY FOR APHRODITE????
She comes out beautifully, descends the staircase, and starts singing "Aphrodite," one of the most beautiful from the new album, continuing with "The One" from the previous "X 2007" and "Wow." The show includes a lot of choreography, movable sets, Kylie riding a fake horse or a man transforming into an angel, being lifted up, and the two flying together.
All the tour outfits were designed and curated by Dolce&Gabbana, very good friends of the Australian diva who have been working with her for many years. In short, the evening lights up with "In My Arms," "Slow," "I Believe in You" (a scene that Madonna would later reprise for the halftime show at the following year's Super Bowl), "Spinning Around," but also older songs like "Better the Devil You Know" from 1990, "Hand on Your Heart," and many other 80's productions.
From her indie years, she sings the beautiful "Confide in Me," which remains, in my opinion, her greatest ballad ever with remarkable vocal notes.
"Can't Get You Out of My Head" is given a more rock twist, and it works; the 12,000 at the Mediolanum Forum joke with her even at the beginning when, being International Women's Day, Kylie gets personal and throws a bouquet of mimosa to the audience, celebrating with her fans the women like her.
Energetic, friendly, smiling, she continues with tracks from the new album "Looking for an Angel," "Put Your Hands Up," "Get Outta My Way" but also a classic from the pop scene "There Must Be an Angel," and the audience applauds endlessly.
We're nearing the end, everything becomes more magical with fountains that entertain and amaze with sudden water games; with "On a Night Like This," it almost seems like the concert is over, but when Kylie dedicates a song to love "All the Lovers," everyone is on their feet, and the fountains push even more water, soaking those of us in the front rows. But who cares, this is Kylie's water. Holy water! The water of someone who has sung to us live for two straight hours without stopping, the water of one who has been singing live since 1987 (next year will mark 30 years), the water of one who fought cancer and won.
Hoping not to have to wait another 4 years to have her back in a show of this caliber in Italy, I fondly remember Women's Day from 5 years ago. My friends who didn't follow Kylie are now avid Minogue fans.
