For my first review on Debaser, I've decided to talk about a great hard rock album, not very well known but definitely a positive effort. It was 1983 when the Swiss metal band, Krokus, released "Headhunter," their best album in my opinion. Their music has always been heavily inspired by the rock played by AC/DC, and they are indeed often accused by many music critics of being a copycat band of the Australians. In fact, besides the fact that the songs are pure hard rock, the vocal timbre similarity between the great Bon Scott and the less famous Maltese singer Marc Storace is immediately evident. However, with this work, Krokus silence many criticisms: the CD is actually more aggressive than the previous ones; closer to the style of Judas Priest or Saxon than to that of the Young brothers' band; the Swiss also demonstrate great technical abilities, starting from the singer to the skilled guitarist and the rhythm section consisting of bassist Chris Von Rohr, the historic leader of the band, and the new drummer Steve Peace. Here are the tracks:
1"Headhunter," one of the hardest songs on the album features exceptional high notes from Storace and good drum work.
2"Eat The Rich," the best of the album, is the most similar to the Ac/Dc style: a catchy riff, chorus that stays in your head all day, and a well-done solo by Fernando Von Arb leading to the finale.
3 "Screaming In The Night" is the calmest song on the album but perfectly executed: the singer shows in this track that he has a voice that adapts to all occasions.
4 "Ready To Burn," another rock song, fairly hard and enjoyable, worth noting the presence of Rob Halford singing in the chorus.
5 "Night Wolf" is another genuinely metallic song of the album, surely one of the best.
6 "Stayed Awake All Night" is a cover by Bachman-Turner Overdrive, in my opinion, it is one of the less successful tracks on the album, not very engaging and boring in some parts.
7 "Stand And Be Counted" is better than the previous one but not memorable.
8 "White Din" is an instrumental, perhaps unnecessary because it doesn't create the right atmosphere to launch into the next song and practically steals 2 precious minutes of your life.
9 "Russian Winter" concludes the CD very well, the solo is perfect and the song is gritty just enough.
Recommended to all fans of genuine Hard Rock and classic Heavy Metal
"The first track is stratospheric, 'Headhunter' is a true Metal bomb worthy of the early NWOBHM."
"I enjoy listening to 'Night Wolf' very Accept-like."
