Kokopelli is a prehistoric figure found in rock engravings, particularly evident in the southwestern United States, in the "Four Corners" area.
It represents a kind of goblin playing a flute or something similar, which is believed to be an excellent vehicle for fertility. Why did Kosheen title their new album Kokopelli?
Perhaps because the new album by the "Dance Combo" is more intimate and enigmatic compared to the previous "Resist," extremely sunny and good-mooded. Or maybe just because the title matched well with the band's strange name? Who knows! The fact is that this album is really quite enjoyable and I can already see it in "heavy rotation" on my player.
Kosheen is a British trio formed in the shadow of the Bristol sound. Darren Beale, who played in a punk band, decided to throw everything away and buy an Atari when he met Geoff Barrow of Portishead. Together with his partner Markee Substance, they encountered Welsh vocalist Sian Evans, reminiscent in formation and type of music of the early days of St. Etienne.
After the great success of their debut album, the follow-up represents a significant leap forward. The sound becomes less predictable, indeed it is enriched by distorted and non-distorted guitar riffs. This is very evident in the track "Wish," which for me is already a hit.
Even Sian's voice becomes darker, blending divinely with the more edgy melodies produced by her musicians.
"Tearing it out
I'm under your skin
Bows in your eyes
Murder on gin
You hide inside
But I'm coming in
It isn't over if we never begin" from "Wasting My Time" which opens the album.
"See the world through a window
A thousand miles
But in my heart
I'm drifting to your tired eyes
Close your eyes" from "Coming Home."
I also recommend the very dark "Avalanche," which recalls something between Tricky and Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy."
An intimate, reserved album, sung from the outside in. With a mysterious, enigmatic, superstitious title. It's a dance album, at times almost Chill Out.
Ideal for tonight with this unbearable temperature, the stifling heat, the skin covered with those annoying salty droplets.
Unmissable.
