I have already written and said it many times on Deb: instrumental Post-Rock is the only genre of Music that still has the power to make me jump out of my chair. At my venerable age, in June I will be 57, believe me, it's not insignificant for me.
And as it is very easy to guess, beyond the untouchable sacred monsters like Helmet and especially Godflesh, who have released two new works of a certain solidity in 2023, it is the German Kolyma that win the deserved award for album of the year.
Very little information online that I have managed to find about them; they are from Kiel, northern Germany, and they should be making their debut on a long-distance. They also released an EP last autumn.
Six songs that unfold over a time span just over forty minutes. Mostly long, substantial tracks that flow pleasantly for those like me who appreciate and enjoy these atmospheric sounds.
As a term of comparison, I feel like likening them to their compatriots Long Distance Calling: same emotional impact, same rising pattern of the individual tracks, absolute mastery of the instruments, with long instrumental sections driven by the continuous interplay of the two guitars that alternate in dominating the scene.
With the addition of a punctual, lively, and precise rhythm section.
Cool and restrained in the opening notes of the closing Basalt, with a supple and soft riff of the six-string that suddenly takes off, transforms, ignites, and grows in vigor, concluding an auditory trip capable of projecting you into the bleak space.
I need nothing else...
