It doesn't want to be taken seriously because it simply doesn't give a damn... Fine, I'll do the same.
I take a trip outside of Europe and rush into the States to get into the character of Kid Rock. I want to dive fully into the flashiness, the indifference, the desire for rock 'n' roll, and the women of a man who is practically a legend in America and who isn’t acclaimed at all here (but why would he care, since he sells out in his own country until his wallet bursts).
"Devil Without A Cause," his first album with a major label, shows who this thirty-something from Detroit is and what his musical tastes are: passionate about hip hop (especially old school) and also a fan of hard rock like AC/DC and ZZ Top. In fact, he has rapper qualities and his band (the Twisted Brown Trucker Band) makes quite the noise with their guitar riffs. An album that's easy to listen to but full of diverse and successful sounds: from the pure rock of songs like the opening "Bawitdaba," "Fist Of Rage," and "I Am The Bullgod," to the country-saloon of "Cowboy" and "Wasting Time," to Rock Da Party! songs like "Welcome To The Party," "Devil Without A Cause," "Where U At Rock," and "Somebody's Gotta Feel This," true anthems for wild parties, and very beautiful and intense songs like "Only God Knows Why" where the blend of a Cher-like synthesized voice and a crescendo of sounds makes this song a very emotional and, all in all, good quality track. Also worth mentioning is the furious rap of "Fuck Off" sung with his fellow Detroiter Eminem when he was still a semi-unknown suburban rapper. The lyrics certainly don't have a philosophical attitude; they don't touch on social issues or inner turmoil or other things (I like pussy, suckin' on titties, fucked a lot of different bitches from a bunch of different cities - I rock for the cash and the topless dancers, don't have no answers so pass the joint - His dick was metal, her pussy was a magnet, this is his life philosophy: sex, drugs, and debauchery).
An album that is ultimately pleasant, with some good moments, embodied by a character who, in my opinion, is great for doing things his chaotic and honest way, but essentially (as already mentioned) it's JUST a pleasant album, nothing more.
His vocation at the time, old-school rap rhythms on vaguely hard rock bases, already felt dated but stood out for its party-themed yet reactionary messages.
These are stereotypical but powerful and tacky songs, mixing white rap, scratching, and strong guitars.
