There are some extraordinary films that (for a mountain of reasons I won't write here) remain almost unknown to the general public but that deserve a place of honor among the best ever.
This is the case with Fandango, a 1985 USA production, where the happy hand of Kevin Reynolds not only manages to deliver a stunning debut (and never matched again) as director, but also a story and screenplay that later became among the most borrowed in Hollywood.
It is arguably the best adolescent road movie ever made.
The film opens with a graduation party for a group of Texan students where two boys have received their draft cards for Vietnam.
Shattered and scared (one even breaks up with his girlfriend), they decide to escape with two other companions in a Cadillac towards Mexico both to reach a safe zone and to unearth the old Dom buried years prior by the same group (and who could that be?).
The journey will be an incredible and thrilling sequence of crazy, dramatic, comic, touching, and poetic events, rendered through the lightheartedness of boys aware they are on the verge of becoming men, allowing you to have fun (and think, which is always a plus), all while keeping an eye of absolute benevolence over the series of events.
The film is consumed in one breath, beginning with the breathtaking opening credits sequence that alone would be worth the price of a hypothetical ticket. This sequence has become an absolute cult, with the editing of a burst of mini-scenes each of which later became abundant material for inspiration for others.
A poetic ending... but that's it, lest someone wants to do themselves a favor by possibly watching it with friends.
Perfect cast, each in their role. A then very young promising actor stands out.
Absolutely a must-see.
Especially suitable for:
all the twenty-somethings, thirty-somethings, forty-somethings, fifty-somethings, and sixty-somethings who are or feel young at heart
those who want to enjoy a good film, fun but that leaves something behind
for those who are ready to grow up to "devour" life...
