If there's a group that even in the 2000s can truly give meaning to the definition "indie," it's Broken Social Scene. In their case, Indie essentially means "do whatever you like in a more or less intelligible context," which has led them to produce at least one masterpiece of the decade (in my opinion), namely "You Forgot It in People."
Kevin Drew, probably the leader of this multifaceted band, has released an apparently solo album that insists on and exalts the aforementioned philosophy. It's somewhat a sort of philosophy of chaos, with songs that deliberately lose their center of gravity because they intuitively and with more expressive strength understood that, in general, the very concept of a song is now obsolete. This album, one of the most brilliant of the past year for me, is a succession, more than actual songs, of themes that connect or contrast, juxtaposed in a random or more or less systematic manner, in any case, they drag and take the listener far from where they started... The common trait in the pieces is that slightly "dreamy" atmosphere that pervades everything even more explicitly than in the Broken Social Scene albums, but Drew's vision remains 360 degrees, in terms of arrangement, instrumentation, structure: the most total and systematic negation of the very concept of cliché.
The total effect of this album is a gigantic trip into the loss of language embodied by the '00s, which doesn't mean he lacks language, but that each musical piece can have thousands without losing, in his case, the expressive uniqueness. As per the lesson of Broken Social Scene, after all, Drew knows well what Post Rock means; an attitude from which he very intelligently takes the intent, not the form.

You thought you were leaving
temporary grieving
You backed out on the cocks
you backed out on the cocks

if they wanna love you
make sure they fuck you
You backed out on the cocks
you backed out on the cocks

you think it's the season
temporary treason
You backed out on the cocks
you backed out on the cocks

they wanna hunt you
make sure they love/want to
You backed out on the cocks
you backed out on the cocks

everyone can write this song
but they can't write you and me
oh, everyone can write this song
but they can't write you and me

If the lies they dont' fit ya
better trade some spit ya,
You backed out on the cocks
you backed out on the cocks

time is a leaver
thought she was a stealer
You backed out on the cocks
you backed out on the cocks

Everyone can write this song
but they can't write you and me
oh everyone can write this song
they can't write you and me
