Keren Ann is Israeli, raised between the Netherlands and France where she is already a cult figure, and a dispenser of pop masterpieces in the best British tradition.
It's at least strange that she decides to title her latest work “Not Going Anywhere,” after all these moves.
I put her record in my stereo, close my eyes. I am immediately transported to distant landscapes painted in watercolor, gloomy, cloudy, foggy. But from the leaden sky, sun rays like songs penetrate, pure hope.
This is the innocent and angelic voice of Keren Ann, hope. Hope overdubbed on melancholic, sometimes sad music and atmospheres. It's a singing devoid of virtuosity, but always enveloping, warm and seductive.
Lighter and carefree moments wake me from the journey (just to remind me that “I’m not going anywhere”), these are “Sailor & Window” and “Spanish Song Bird”.
It closes with the psychedelic “Ending Song”.
At first listen, we might think of the most traditional folk, but in reality, there’s much more here. There are indeed arpeggiated guitars, but also piano, string symphonies, orchestral parts, and angelic choirs making it all transcendental. A sweet and unmissable record!
