Honestly, I thought it was no longer possible to hear a bit of good pop not excessively loaded with beats or too many trendy influences like the R&B that's currently all the rage. I thought it was impossible to hear some instrumental pop, so to speak.
And yet, Katy Perry manages to surprise me with her "One Of The Boys", from which the track "I Kissed a Girl" was released (first in America and recently in Italy), an irreverent song that tells us about a young woman in a club experiencing kissing a girl.
Whether it's because being lesbian is trendy, or because Katy is a beautiful girl, she catapults straight to number one.
But what's beyond "I Kissed a Girl" in the album "One Of The Boys"? Can we just stop at the pounding rhythm of her first single?
Absolutely not, because it's well-made pop.
It's nothing demanding, nothing particularly elaborate. It's simply a collection of songs to hum in the shower, to listen to while jogging, in short ... the classic fun and engaging pop.
The album opens precisely with One Of The Boys, a cute and direct song, very catchy. It follows with I Kissed a Girl, which needs no introduction or reviews, after all, just one listen and it captures you. Moving on, we find Waking Up in Vegas and Thinking Of You, good songs far less "impactful" than the previous ones, but I'd say here too we're looking at objectively good tracks. Slightly less good is Mannequin, which risks boring on the first listen.
Yet the album suddenly recovers, reminding me what kind of product I'm dealing with: Ur So Gay appears (the title is already a whole program) which, with whistling and a light rhythm accompanied by the piano, proves to be one of the best tracks on the album. Right after, a full electronic jolt begins with Hot'n'Cold, the second single released. There are no words, it's engaging, it captures you and doesn't bore you. It's a worthy successor to I Kissed a Girl and is easy to hum. ("...cause you're hot and you're cold, you're yes then you're no, you're in then you're out...")
Continuing, we find other interesting tracks: the lively If You Can Afford Me, the sad and slow Lost and then we're introduced to another pop-rock piece, this time it's Self Inflicted that makes a good impression. The album approaches its end with I'm Still Breathing and Fingerprints. Especially the latter is an excellent closure for this album, summarizing its spirit and pleasantly concluding the listening experience.
In short, there's really little to say, because Katy Perry managed to create an entire album that doesn't bore and that musically leaves us with something more, without any special effort, of course.
I'd say it deserves at least one listen and then well, it can be left in the iTunes library, sometimes it's good to relax... and why not do it with One Of The Boys?
The overall idea that emerges after listening is one of banality; banality in the lyrics, banality in the "instrumental" parts, so to speak, banality in the vocal melody.
We are thus faced with a qualitatively negligible product, filled with mushy songs and few ideas.
