Small Initial Note: I have already written some time ago about a Super Bowl HalfTime Show, so those who (I don't think there are many) might not know what it's about, I'll refer them to this Review.
"Gaga needs to be relevant again so that she could perform next. She's the only performer out there who could match or even exceed this one." (A Comment on the Tube)
She had promised lions and other fierce animals...
...and indeed she brought them: the Guardian wrote that (the) Perry "redefined the concept of Kitsch", I (a few hours earlier) had noticed that, whether one likes the performer and her very personal way of seeing the world in Camp tints or not, she delivered quite a punch on live television.
In the end, she is not asked for Culture or Elegance (which then we debaserians "may not have culture, but in terms of finesse no one can screw us over" so we cannot push too hard on these concepts) but indeed excess, excess, excess. Of all kinds: just like the three secrets of French cooking*.
It is clear that it's not the kind of stage that demands it (there were, the aforementioned, Tom Petty and the Who to name two...), because it is about the ecumenism of showbiz in its raw state (just don't show the boobs: right Janet?), but it's a precise stylistic choice (but also a lifestyle, I want to believe).
"The etymology of opulence is 'o polenta' (concia)." (P.B.)
It's a dirty job what she does but someone has to do it and she, along with little Gaga, in my opinion, does it as the Gods command, regardless of the elitist minorities who would want all of us to listen to niche Punk and Garage (or crypt, I would say) but also of those who never came out alive from reference decades (choose for yourself: they are interchangeable). They should get over it: the best of possible systems (Indirect Democracy) is this too.
It's true we could...
...talk about how important media push is for the character's performance but, seriously, is it relevant?
We live in a system of Sets (often intersecting) where Hype (and the methods to increase it) takes on different contours depending on the reference target: the only "against" choice is, indeed, not to be part of any target (and I'm trying, brothers, only Zeus knows how much...) and to give the proper importance to things according to the contexts.
About the show itself...
...there's not much to say: a little over thirteen minutes played on a medley of her Hits (with guests Lenny Kravitz and Missy Elliott who, in turn, medley within the medley in a Droste effect, performed a couple of her pieces) with slightly beachy, slightly Escher, slightly "ethereal and quasi-celestial" sets (and respective costume changes) all in the sign of "please don't forget any 'MTV-like' showbiz cliché"...
"Speak English or Die" (S.O.D.)
