Absolutely the most thoughtful, warmest, and most reflective album produced by the fantastic American trio that had already gifted us with little gems in their previous records.
The new millennium for Karate thus opens with "Unsolved", an authentic jewel, jazz in every respect. The warmth of the Stratocaster strings seeps into your bones from the first track, "Small Fires": the subtle phrasing seems to invite a reverent silence, to catch every little nuance of those hinted melodies. The long, sustained bass supports the rest. Attention is disrupted by tracks like "Sever" and "The Roots And The Ruins", the latter having a delicately reggae feel that doesn't clash at all amidst all this "seriously" committed jazz.
An album to listen to with headphones: the only way not to miss the faintest moan of the guitar, a slight emphasis of the snare's wire hidden beneath everything else, a whisper of Geoff's "hoarse" voice. Do me a favor, listen to it only if you are not in a hurry.
