The track that gives the title to this project "Around the Edges" alone would be enough to entice you to listen to this small yet great independent project by Kalweit & the Spokes. Kalweit is Georgeanne K. directly from Minnesota, already the singer of Delta V ("Le cose cambiano" and "Monaco '74"), while “the Spokes” are Leziero Rescigno (Amor fou, La crus) on drums, organ, and piano and Giovanni Calella (Les Mokò) on guitars. Together, the three create a curious mix between sixties (Nancy Sinatra, The Troggs), blues nuances and some post-punk bursts.
The charm of a rough yet always controlled sound is amplified by the great stage and vocal presence of Georgeanne, who, besides being remembered here for her unique tone (a cross between Patty Smith and a more in-tune Shirley Manson), is also the author of excellent lyrics. The single "Guns are Back" is catchy enough but not too cutesy, and it highlights Rescigno's drumming style, played a lot on the edges of the snare and offbeats. Calella’s liquid yet decisive guitars complete the picture of a CD that compensates for the lack of bass with organ inserts, also by Rescigno.
The work, although ready as early as 2008 and already well underway in terms of live performances since then, is released by Irma Records only this year. Now it’s up to us to take notice.
Tracks to note: "Guns are Back," "New York Movie," "Lulled".
