THE REVIEW

Kaki King @ Modigliana July 5, 2009

Beautiful concert organized by Strade Blu last night in Modigliana featuring the "Little" Kaki King, a young but extremely talented American guitarist, undoubtedly one of the most interesting phenomena of the moment.

The concert scheduled for 9:30 p.m. certainly did not start off in the best way; the artists took to the stage with a good half-hour delay, and once they picked up their instruments, Kaki's "famous" guitar didn't work. After several futile attempts, they decided to start the concert with another guitar and, thus, with another song.

This was the only negative note of the concert because once she picked up the functioning guitar, the Atlanta guitarist and her band transported you into an hour and a half of pure magic.

Kaki King ranges from old tracks from her debut album "Everybody Loves You" (2003) to the more recent "Black Pear Tree" (2008), creating a setlist that breathes noise and psychedelia to sweeter melodies and heavy blues riffs.

They finally managed to fix the Ovation guitar, and amid the applause, Kaki apologized while the drummer (one of the most versatile I've ever seen) left the stage along with the multi-instrumentalist who completed the trio, leaving the young guitarist alone. After a stunning improvisation, Kaki launched into her masterpiece, the magnificent "Playing With Pink Noise", a galloping interplay of sounds and beats, thanks in part to the unusual open C tuning of the guitar. 5 minutes of absolute silence from the audience that erupted into a roar of applause and shouts at the last note.

The "Little" Kaki thanks, the show seemed over, but she returned to the stage for one last piece that started calmly and plunged into total noise as the guitar was left on the ground, and she knelt on the distorters for a couple of minutes before it suddenly ended, leaving room for applause, greetings, and thanks, and disappeared behind the stage. I wasted no time reaching her, and after thanking her for the beautiful show, I stayed to chat for a bit, enough time to take a photo together. Kaki was then surrounded by the audience, so I gave space to others, moving away content with having thanked her for this emotion-filled concert.

Does finger tapping create melodies? What if we did it with both hands simultaneously?

Kaki doesn’t even know what sheet music looks like. She can neither read nor write music.
