At the dawn of the two-thousands, K. d. Lang releases this album, the title of which quotes a phrase from writer Albert Camus: "in the depths of winter, I finally learned that within me lay an invincible summer." It's a collection of "meditative easy listening" songs or if you prefer "surf Brazilian pop" (in K. d. Lang's words), with summer and the sustainable lightness of being as common denominators. "The Consequences of Falling" is the only somewhat introspective track on the CD, from which "Summerfling" onward it is a parade of bright and optimistic melodies. Beautiful "Extraordinary Thing," "What Better Said," "When We Collide," and "Curiosity" are lively yet of remarkable emotional depth. Hypnotic "Simple" and "Love's Great Ocean" are intense and poignant, but always with that gentle summer-like atmosphere. Closing with the masterpiece of the album "Only Love" where Burt Bacharach seems to meet the John Barry of "We Have All The Time In The World."
