THE REVIEW

The experimental journey of our local Julie's Haircut continues relentlessly, as they return two years after "Invocation And Ritual Dance Of My Demon Twin", their first record for the British Rocket Recordings, and their first to have an almost global distribution.

"In The Silence Electric", the second release from the English label, continues the path begun almost a decade ago with the release of "Our Secret Ceremony"; a path that, from the indie rock song form of the beginnings has long embarked on an interplanetary journey towards a (retro)future made of cosmic keyboards, metallic clangs, abundant motorik rhythms, hypnotic almost ambient passages and much more.

Compared to the previous work, there are fewer percussive parts, replaced by hypnotic and amniotic oases ("In Return"), and when the percussions do appear, they seem to have undergone an electronic, metallic treatment that vaguely recalls something between new wave and cosmic jazz ("Pharaoh's Dream"). For the rest, the role of the keyboards remains central, sometimes simultaneously recalling the gusts towards the Milky Way of Klaus Schulze and the ambient(alist) tendencies of solo Brian Eno ("For The Seven Lakes"), while in other tracks they accompany distorted and ominous psych rock tracks like "Until The Lights Go Out" or reverberated and acidic like "Sorcerer". A novelty, compared to previous records, is an approach almost '80s to psychedelia, found in "Emerald Kiss" concluded by the sax of Laura Agnusdei (who joined the lineup permanently since the last album), the sidereal and swaggering blues of "Lord Help Me Find The Way" which strongly recalls the psychedelic gospel of Spiritualized.

And so it seems logical to close the circle with a track that heavily recalls the noisy and mesmerizing catharsis of the early Spacemen 3 ("Anticipation Of The Night") as a seal to a cohesive and concise album, which further legitimizes the role of Julie's not only within the Italian music scene but, we can now say, international.
