LA RECENSIONE

In 1983, the Teardrop Explodes had just begun working on their third album. During the recording of tracks that would be released in 1990 under the title "Everybody Wants To Shag The Teardrop Explodes," Julian Cope announced the dissolution of the band.

After the breakup, Cope took a brief break and began recording this album. Incidentally, World Shut Your Mouth does not contain the hit single of the same name, which would appear a few years later on Saint Julian.

Played by Cope himself with lead guitar contributions from producer Stephen Lovell and former Teardrop Gary Dywer, "World Shut Your Mouth" is a great album, surprisingly underrated compared to its successor. The songs I like most are "Bandy's First Jump," the splendid "Elegant Chaos," "Sunshine Playroom," "Head Hang Low," and not forgetting the near-hit "The Greatness And Perfection Of Love."

"World Shut Your Mouth" is an accomplished debut, fully realizing its creator's intent to skillfully blend Pop and English Psychedelia without ever losing the desire to surprise, a quality that was already characteristic of his group's works.

Summary by Bot

After the Teardrop Explodes disbanded, Julian Cope launched his solo career with 'World Shut Your Mouth.' Despite lacking the later hit single sharing its name, the album shines with a blend of pop and English psychedelia. Featuring strong contributions from collaborators, it showcases Cope's originality and remains an underrated gem. Key tracks include 'Elegant Chaos' and 'The Greatness And Perfection Of Love.'
