Kaukonen is celebrated for his fingerpicking guitar style and roots in blues and country. Reviewers note Quah (1974) as a sparse, solo-guitar masterpiece influenced by Reverend Gary Davis. Blue Country Heart (2002) was recorded in Nashville with guests including Jerry Douglas, Béla Fleck, Sam Bush and Byron House, and features reinterpretations of 1920s–1930s country/bluegrass songs.
