The Profile

Jon Hassell (March 22, 1937 – 2021) was an American trumpeter and composer who conceived the ‘Fourth World’ aesthetic, fusing global traditions with electronics and minimalism. He collaborated widely, including with Brian Eno, Farafina, David Sylvian, and Talking Heads.

Studied with Karlheinz Stockhausen; mentored by Pandit Pran Nath; worked with La Monte Young; coined the ‘Fourth World’ concept blending ancient traditions with modern technology; co-created Fourth World, Volume 1: Possible Musics (1980) with Brian Eno; launched the Ndeya label and released Listening To Pictures (2018) and Seeing Through Sound (2020).

Reviews celebrate Jon Hassell’s Fourth World: a fusion of ancient traditions and modern electronics with a uniquely processed trumpet voice. Key albums like Vernal Equinox, Possible Musics, and Dream Theory in Malaya recur throughout. Writers highlight influences from Stockhausen, La Monte Young, and Pandit Pran Nath. Later work (Pentimento series) returns with rich detail and listener-focused disorientation. Overall tone is ecstatic, metaphysical, and admiring.
