"Time changes everything
Why did we have to say goodbye
I know why the caged bird sings
Time changes everything"
The deus ex machina returns in all his splendor. With his arrogance, with his poetry, with his Pollock-style paintings, and with his Gibson Les Paul!
Surrounded by a band of excellent musicians, from Andy Treacey of Faithless on drums to Simon Jones former bassist of Verve, Squire pulls his shy voice out of the hat, tuning it to remind us of Bob Dylan, especially in the track that gives the album its title. Sometimes he disguises it instead, as in the first track, Joe Louis.
There are references to Led Zeppelin (always a favorite of his), the Stones, and John Lennon. And there are also endless guitar solos, at times annoyingly overdone.
The album is overall soft, somewhat reminiscent of all those who make Alone_with_everybody like Richard Ashcroft, Miles Hunt, Chris Cornell, Evan Dando. And it slightly precedes the one by Noel Gallagher, the man of "Don't look back in Anger".
To conclude, here’s another gem of the poetic abilities of the former Stone Roses:
"I miss you but I can’t explain
Still got you running round my brain
Acres of green grass
Going up in flames
Still got you running round my brain
We walked in the fields by the reservoir
Capable of anything never far
From the wheels of industry
Turning us all around
Shaping you and me"
Deserving
