THE REVIEW

A stifled solitary voice takes shape in its personal dialogue with the spirits of its own turmoil, so that the imaginary world of a reckless young man in his early twenties, first consecrated then rejected and discarded by himself, so abstract and made only of fleeting flashes of anguish, is immediately real.

So much, too much, drugs. It's impossible to ignore how much they influenced the composition of this malaise in music, sadly serving as the main vehicle. But there's more; a bittersweet sensation becomes visible in the intentions of the reckless one with the solitary voice: he dedicates his infected poetry to the purity of a little girl, Clara, daughter of a dear musician friend with whom he reached cursed success. All this to renounce his condition as an adult man who inevitably attracts corruption and depravity, he desires to be something else: his own female alter ego, an extreme vehicle towards the untainted world of childhood, of ingenuousness, ancient and primitive purity.

And the reckless one with the solitary voice draws and arpeggiates subconscious melodies, passionately longing always on the brink of agony, among his best, while spectral voices sing, speak, scream, and jostle in the intimacy of the young reckless one, amid delightfully dirty arrangements. The wonderful feigned nihilism, the painful contradictions, the simple act of creation have invested the musician and uncovered the artist.

Few musicians have gone as far as putting their soul into music.

‘Niandra LaDes’ is an album that travels out of time; unruly and fascinating, it is certainly John Frusciante’s masterpiece.
