John Ford

American film director (1894–1973) born in Portland, Maine, celebrated for redefining the western and American film language. He collaborated closely with John Wayne and Henry Fonda and won a record four Academy Awards for Best Director. Signature works include Stagecoach, The Grapes of Wrath, The Searchers, The Quiet Man, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
