John Fante (1909–1983) was an American novelist and screenwriter born in Denver, Colorado, of Italian immigrant parents. He is best known for his semi-autobiographical novels featuring Arturo Bandini.

Creator of the Arturo Bandini character; Ask The Dust is among his best-known novels. The Road to Los Angeles was written in 1936 and published posthumously (with Charles Bukowski playing a role in its eventual publication). His work frequently depicts Italian-American immigrant life in Los Angeles.

DeBaser's reviews emphasize John Fante's recurring alter ego Arturo Bandini and his dusty, desperate Los Angeles. Themes include Italian-American immigrant life, ambition, failure and comic-tragic family scenes. Reception among reviewers here ranges from lukewarm to highly enthusiastic.

For:Readers of mid-20th-century American fiction, fans of autobiographical novels and immigrant narratives, and those drawn to gritty Los Angeles stories.

Arturo Gabriel Bandini, megalomaniac, egocentric, perpetually horny; irascible like a Chihuahua in heat; son and brother of two prostitute nuns blinded by Christianity, which he continues to support; son of a deceased carpenter; liar; hungry reader of Nietzsche and Spengler; eighteen-year-old bored and thoughtful who would erase everyone from thisearth except Jim, the one with a nice head who always denies him tips, and Miss Hopkins... the one with the nice thighs who works at the library.

Arturo Bandini, alter ego of Fante(and not only, of course), is an irascible and arrogant man: racist and grumpy, he is not afraid to say what he thinks even if it’s at the cost of hurting others’ feelings and suffering the inevitable consequences of his behavior.

it didn’t move me, and every time I picked up the book, I didn’t have that desire to delve into the protagonists’ story.
